Immediate Post-Surgery: First 72 Hours
What You’ll Experience
- Compression Bra: Applied in the OR to reduce swelling, support shape, and protect incisions.
- Mild to Moderate Pain: Controlled with prescribed medication; most patients describe it as pressure or tightness rather than sharp pain.
- Swelling & Bruising: Most noticeable in the first week.
- Limited Arm Use: Avoid lifting arms above shoulder height.
At-Home Tips
- Rest in a reclined position to minimize tension on incisions.
- Keep essential items within arm’s reach to avoid stretching.
- Take short, gentle walks several times a day to prevent blood clots.
Week 1: Rest and Gentle Movement
Goals:
- Keep your compression bra on 24/7 (except brief showers).
- Maintain arm movements within safe limits.
- Eat a protein-rich diet to promote healing.
Activities:
- Light activities around the house are fine.
- Avoid lifting more than 5–10 lbs (about the weight of a gallon of milk).
- No driving until you are off narcotic pain medications and can maneuver comfortably.
First Follow-Up:
- Usually within 5–7 days at our Trumbull office.
- We check your incisions, remove any drains (if placed), and update your care instructions.
Weeks 2–3: Regaining Daily Function
- Most patients return to desk work in this window.
- Swelling begins to decrease noticeably.
- Bruising fades to a yellowish hue before disappearing.
- Itching along incisions can occur as nerves regenerate.
Scar Care Begins:
Once incisions are fully closed (typically by week 2–3), we start silicone therapy using sheets or gel to help scars heal flat and smooth.
Patient Testimonial (Milford):
“The silicone sheets were easy to use and really helped my scars fade quickly.” — Sara, Milford
Weeks 4–6: Light Exercise and Gradual Return to Activities
- Light Cardio: Walking, stationary bike, and gentle yoga stretches (avoid overhead poses until cleared).
- Scar Massage: Introduced once scars are stable to improve texture and mobility.
- Strength Training: Light weights for lower body; no chest or arm workouts until after 6 weeks.
- Sleeping Position: You may be cleared to sleep on your side if comfortable.
Months 3–6: Shape Refinement and Scar Fading
- Swelling continues to subside, revealing more final shape.
- Breasts feel softer and more natural.
- Scars shift from pink/red to light brown or skin tone.
- Numbness may begin to improve; some patients regain sensation gradually.
Patient Testimonial (Westport):
“By month three, I could wear fitted tops again and felt more confident than ever.” — Dana, Westport
12–18 Months: Long-Term Healing
- Final breast shape and position stabilize.
- Scars reach full maturity, typically flat and lighter than early months.
- This is also the ideal time for any small revision procedures if needed.
Scar Care Best Practices
- Silicone Gel or Sheets: Apply daily for at least 3–6 months.
- Sun Protection: Keep scars out of direct sunlight or use SPF 50+.
- Massage: Gentle, circular motion once approved to keep scars pliable.
- Consistent Care: Daily application yields the best long-term results.
- No Smoking: Nicotine delays healing and worsens scar quality.
