1. Am I a good candidate for breast reduction?

You may be a good candidate if:

  • You have large breasts causing physical symptoms like neck, shoulder, and back pain
  • You experience skin irritation or rashes beneath the breasts
  • Your breasts limit your physical activity or clothing choices
  • You have shoulder strap grooves from bra straps
  • You’re in good overall health and a non-smoker (or can quit before surgery)

We also evaluate breast size, skin quality, and your goals to determine the best surgical approach.

2. Will insurance cover my surgery?

In many cases, yes — if your symptoms meet medical necessity criteria. This usually requires:

  • Documentation of chronic pain
  • Proof that you’ve tried conservative treatments
  • Estimated removal of a specific amount of breast tissue

Our office handles benefit verification, documentation, and preauthorization. See our full guide: Insurance & Coverage for Breast Reduction in Connecticut.

3. How much smaller will my breasts be?

We discuss your desired size during consultation, but your final size depends on:

  • How much tissue can be removed safely while preserving shape and nipple function
  • Insurance removal requirements (if applicable)
  • Your frame and body proportions

Many patients go down 1–3 cup sizes, but the focus is on proportion, comfort, and symmetry.

4. What is the recovery like?

Typical recovery milestones:

  • Return to desk work: 1–2 weeks
  • Resume light cardio: 4 weeks
  • Resume upper body workouts: 6–8 weeks
  • Full swelling resolution and scar fading: 6–12 months

We give you a detailed post-op plan including wound care, scar treatment, and activity restrictions.

5. Will I lose nipple sensation?

Temporary numbness is common due to swelling and nerve stretching.

  • Sensation often returns within 3–6 months.
  • Permanent changes are rare but possible, especially with very large reductions.

We take every step possible to preserve sensation.

6. Can I breastfeed after reduction?

Some women can still breastfeed, but it’s not guaranteed. The ability to breastfeed depends on:

  • The surgical technique used
  • How much glandular tissue is removed
  • Whether milk ducts are preserved

If future breastfeeding is a priority, tell us during consultation so we can plan accordingly.

7. What will my scars look like?

Scarring depends on the technique:

  • Anchor pattern: Around areola + vertical + horizontal crease scar
  • Vertical: Around areola + vertical scar
  • Liposuction-only: Small hidden incisions

Scars fade over 12–18 months with proper care. We use silicone gel, sun protection, and massage to optimize results.

Patient Testimonial (Fairfield):

“I was nervous about scars, but mine have faded so much in a year that you can barely see them in a bikini.” — Tasha, Fairfield

8. How much pain will I be in?

Pain is typically mild to moderate and well controlled with:

  • Prescription pain medication for the first few days
  • Transition to over-the-counter pain relievers
  • Supportive surgical bra to reduce tension on incisions

Most patients describe discomfort as tightness or soreness rather than sharp pain.

9. What are the risks?

All surgeries carry risks such as:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Poor wound healing
  • Asymmetry
  • Unfavorable scarring
  • Fat necrosis (firm lumps)
  • Loss of nipple sensation

Choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon reduces risk and ensures you have a qualified professional managing your care.

10. When will I see the final results?

You’ll notice an immediate difference after surgery, but:

  • Swelling takes several months to fully resolve
  • Final shape and scar appearance are seen at 6–12 months

11. How long will results last?

Results are long-lasting, but:

  • Significant weight changes
  • Pregnancy
  • Aging and gravity

… can alter your breast shape over time.

12. What’s the difference between reduction and lift?

  • Breast reduction: Removes tissue and skin to reduce size
  • Breast lift: Reshapes and lifts without significantly changing size

Many reductions include a lift as part of the procedure.

13. Will insurance require a certain tissue removal amount?

Yes, some carriers require a minimum amount of tissue removal per breast based on body surface area (BSA).

We calculate this during consultation and submit to your insurer.

14. Can I combine breast reduction with other procedures?

Yes. Popular combinations include:

  • Liposuction of the axillary (“bra bulge”) area
  • Tummy tuck or panniculectomy

Combination procedures require longer surgery time and recovery, but can provide a more complete transformation.

15. How do I prepare for surgery?

We provide a personalized pre-op checklist, including:

  • Medical clearance (if needed)
  • Lab tests
  • Stopping smoking and certain medications
  • Arranging a ride and post-op help at home
